Christine Comeau




My recent experiences in artistic residencies abroad and in Quebec led me to think about the notions of nomadism. I wonder about the concepts of mobility and interrelation between forms and beings, the stress and physical and mental boundaries caused by displacement (travel, creative residencies, drifts, exile). The notion of sculpture clothing as the camouflage of my real identity and alienation became relevant in my path. I design clothes and mobile relational structures that serve the achievement of installation and collective performance in which people are invited to participate. So I am interested in different fabrics and materials, different colors and making systems to create sociological clothes.

I propose to the art organisations this concept of nomadic stopping place through resicencies, art events and exhibitions. Travels allow me to move forward, to see more clearly, to adapt to new circles and to meet new people. “The semionaute artist puts the shapes in motion, inventing with them and through them, journeys during which the self is elaborated while a body of work is being created.” (Nicolas Bourriaud in “The Radicant”). In this spirit, the movement, and the journeys I set out for myself through these movements make me a sémionaute who can settle down anywhere without ever feeling at home.

During each new project I develope a new component, with the intend to develop new prototypes of tents. Within each prototype are grafted with Velcro varying combinations which participants can wear. System fasteners are often designed with the aim of linking, psychologically or physically the participants all together. It is the basis of my connectable clothes. It means docking the homes like a space station. And bound by the ties, my movements are affecting the movement of my companions. Wearing these clothes alone they become a second skin. Volunteers can acquire an envelope to camouflage their real identity. It allows them to experience their alienation from themselves. Alienation is also a feeling of being different from others. This feeling often arises with regard to a passersby. Combinations, often equipped with a single handle, cover the entire body. The individual becomes a member of a community.

The tents are mobile homes and as such quickly built and quickly undone, which gives them the feel of having nothing, like the life in slums is a life in a very improvised makeshift way. Obviously, the objective being that the tents, sculptures and docking-garments are inhabited by humans. Tents unfold in outer space, such as a camp, they breathe, take their full extent.

Short Biography

Christine Comeau is a young professional visual artist and poet from Quebec, Canada. She has practiced theater before pursuing studies in visual arts. Starting out as a painter, she now dedicates her life in making sculptural textile art works and installation and writing poetry. She has completed a MFA degree in visual arts at Laval University, in Quebec city. The topics of her work are about nomadism, exil, identities and networks between human being and their environment. Her art work has been presented in several individual and collective events and exhibitions in Canada, Brasil, United States, Sweden, Portugal and Germany. During the past years she took part of different artistic residencies in north America and Europe. She works and lives in Montreal.
